Driving Local Change: Men for Equality Deepens Community Dialogues to Promote Positive Masculinity and End Harmful Practices

Across communities in The Gambia, Men for Equality, supported by UNFPA and UNICEF Gambia, is strengthening its grassroots engagement efforts to promote positive masculinity, gender equality, and the abandonment of harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and child marriage. These engagements form a vital part of the national movement toward safer, equitable communities where the rights and dignity of all are respected.

Through community dialogues, Men for Equality continues to bring together elders, parents, youth, religious leaders, and men and boys to rethink harmful norms and co-create solutions rooted in local values and lived experiences.

Safe Spaces for Honest and Inclusive Conversation

One of the strongest features of these community engagements is the creation of safe, open spaces where diverse groups can freely discuss sensitive issues. These conversations allow participants to reflect on how cultural expectations shape family life and community relations.

Discussions focus on:

  • Gender roles and expectations
  • Power dynamics within households and communities
  • Social and health consequences of harmful practices
  • Positive parenting and nurturing family relationships

Many participants shared personal stories, some painful, some hopeful, that sparked deeper awareness and encouraged others to rethink harmful practices that have persisted for generations.

Engaging Men and Boys as Partners in Change

A core pillar of the initiative is working directly with men and boys, inviting them to see themselves not as bystanders but as active partners in championing safety, equality, and respect. Through guided reflection and real-life scenarios, participants explored:

  • How harmful masculinities fuel violence and discrimination
  • How empathy, responsibility, and care build stronger families
  • The role of men in preventing FGM, child marriage, and gender-based violence
  • Positive leadership models rooted in protection rather than power

These sessions often become turning points as men acknowledge the influence they hold and commit to using it to protect the rights of women and girls.

Community-Led Solutions for Sustainable Change

Each dialogue concludes with community-driven commitments that reflect local priorities and realities. Rather than imposing solutions, Men for Equality facilitates a process where:

  • Local leaders propose culturally relevant strategies
  • Youth activists share ideas to reach their peers
  • Parents discuss changes they can implement at home
  • Men and boys set goals for advocating respect and non-violence

This approach reinforces ownership, making long-term change more sustainable and meaningful.

Strengthening a Nationwide Movement

The ongoing community engagements contribute to a growing, nationwide movement rooted in dignity, equality, and the protection of all citizens, especially women and girls. By amplifying local voices and building partnerships with leaders across regions, Men for Equality is ensuring that positive masculinity and gender equality are not just concepts but lived practices within Gambian communities.

As these conversations ripple outward, they inspire collective action, transforming homes, strengthening families, and reshaping community norms for generations to come.
