Shaping New Voices of Leadership: Men for Equality Trains Tertiary Students on Positive Masculinity
Men for Equality has successfully hosted a transformative training with students from tertiary institutions, focusing on positive masculinity, gender equality, and the role of young men in ending harmful traditional practices.
A New Understanding of Manhood
Through interactive discussions, case studies, and peer reflections, participants explored healthier, progressive expressions of masculinity rooted in:
- Empathy and emotional intelligence
- Respect and accountability
- Non-violence and shared responsibility
- Advocacy for gender justice
Building Male Allies for Gender Equality
Students examined the power they hold as peers, partners, and community influencers. They explored how men can actively prevent gender-based violence and dismantle harmful norms that uphold FGM and discrimination.
They left with practical skills to:
- Challenge harmful jokes and peer pressure
- Support survivors
- Promote respect in their schools and communities
- Mentor younger boys
University Spaces as Agents of Change
Tertiary institutions shape future policymakers, educators, activists, and professionals. By targeting these spaces, Men for Equality is cultivating leaders capable of influencing national dialogue on gender and social justice.
A Step Toward a More Equitable Future
This initiative is part of our broader mission to promote gender-transformative programming and build communities where dignity, respect, and equality are the norm.

Men for Equality with support from UNFPA and UNICEF Gambia continues to expand its grassroots engagement efforts with community dialogues that promote gender equality, positive masculinity, and the abandonment of harmful practices such as FGM and child marriage.
Safe Spaces for Honest Community Dialogue
These engagements create inclusive environments where parents, youth, and community leaders discuss:
- Gender roles and expectations
- Power imbalances
- The consequences of harmful practices
- Positive parenting and healthy family relations

Engaging Men and Boys as Partners in Change
A central focus is helping men and boys understand their role in fostering safer, more respectful communities. Participants explored how masculinity can be expressed through protection, empathy, and responsible leadership, rather than dominance.
Community-Led Solutions
Each session concludes with community-driven commitments that reinforce ownership and sustainability. Local leaders, and youth activists collaborate to design strategies that speak to their realities.
Strengthening a Nationwide Movement
Through these engagements, Men for Equality is cultivating a national movement grounded in dignity, equality, and protection for all.
