Men for Equality, with support from UNFPA Gambia, has made national history by hosting The Gambia’s first-ever All-Men Conference on Positive Masculinity. This groundbreaking gathering created a powerful, unified platform where men and boys from all seven administrative regions came together to reflect, learn, and commit to leading transformational change.
The conference marks a major milestone in the country’s movement toward gender equality—placing men at the center of solutions, dialogue, and long-term advocacy for the wellbeing of women, girls, and communities.
A New National Space for Men’s Reflection and Leadership
For the first time in The Gambia, men convened in a dedicated space to openly discuss gender norms, harmful practices, and the responsibility they carry in shaping safer families and communities. Participants engaged in rich, interactive sessions covering:
- Gender-based violence and its root causes
- The impact of FGM on women, families, and communities
- Positive parenting and nurturing fatherhood
- Leadership built on empathy, accountability, and respect
The atmosphere was transformative—combining honest storytelling, critical reflection, and collective learning that challenged deep-seated beliefs about manhood.

Challenging Outdated Norms and Reimagining Masculinity
The conference boldly confronted the stereotypes and social pressures that often define masculinity in harmful ways. Instead of dominance or emotional suppression, participants embraced a new vision of manhood grounded in:
- Care and compassion
- Responsibility and integrity
- Non-violence and equality
- Partnership and shared decision-making
Many attendees expressed how refreshing and empowering it felt to have a safe space dedicated entirely to men—an opportunity to unpack challenges, ask questions, and explore healthier behaviors together.
A National Declaration and Call to Action
One of the most significant outcomes of the event was the collective drafting of a Declaration and Call to Action. This landmark document outlines the commitments men pledged to uphold, including:
- Standing against all forms of gender-based violence
- Actively promoting the abandonment of FGM
- Practicing positive parenting and respectful relationships
- Serving as role models within their families and communities
- Advocating for policies and practices that uphold gender equality
This declaration represents a unified national voice—men choosing to be part of the solution.

A Milestone in The Gambia’s Journey Toward Gender Justice
The All-Men Conference is more than an event—it is a historic shift. By centering men and boys as critical partners in advancing gender equality, Men for Equality is strengthening national efforts to transform harmful gender norms and create lasting social change.
This milestone marks the beginning of a broader movement—one where Gambian men stand together, committed to building communities rooted in dignity, respect, and equality for all.
